Villandraut
Gironde
At the door of the Sauternes region the town has an exceptional XIVth century castle built for Clement V, bishop of Bordeaux then the first Christian pope to set up headquarters in Avignon.
The castle has pure strong lines and was designed in such a way as to combine harmoniously the two functions of home and fortress. The vast U-shaped castle is built around a central courtyard.
Enclosed within rectangular walls, it is guarded by six towers. Inside, many vaulted rooms remain intact.
Villandraut is a lovely town for a pleasant stay between forest and the Ciron river, vineyards, and the Lac de Castagnet with it's beach and leisure area. There's a canoeing centre, a camp site and a montain-bike hire shop.
During the music and theatre festival, enjoy the role playing and other special events.
