The writer-philosopher Montesquieu was born at his XIIIth century fortified castle at La Brède in 1689, and here wrote most of his work.

The beautiful English style heritage park lies around the castle and its moat with a working drawbridge. The descendants have kept intact the furniture, bedroom and belongings of the philosopher.
