Bordeaux, the 2000 years old Port de la Lune, on the banks of the Garonne river is the capital of Aquitaine.

Called moon port because of its shape it use to be the main south of France gate away. Ships were leaving to the northern European contrys, the occidental African coast, the Réunion,the Guadeloupe, the Martinique islands and Paris of course! Beside transport of goods, Bordeaux's port was also up to 1938, the boarding for Guyanne of the convicts. In summer 1939 , "l'île de Ré", an old boat ,made the last journey to Guyanne. At that time two passenger boats use to do the navigation to South Africa, on schedule.

En 1945, lorsque les allemands évacuaient le Port de Bordeaux, ils firent couler 13 bateaux, afin de boucher le port. Bordeaux ainsi coupé, n'avait aucun ravitaillement direct à part celui venu par les camions venant de pauillac. Le premier marinier a être passer au travers de cette muraille entre les bateaux coulés, parsemés de mines, fut Monsieur René Frayssines sur le "Bordelais". De nombreux scaphandriers à l'époque, ont payé de leur vie pour découper cet amas gigantesque de tôle et de fer et libérer le port. La Gironde et Bordeaux en a vu des bateaux et en vécu des aventures. Comme celle du "Visconsin" qui chargeait de rhum et posé malencontreusement sur un banc de sable par le travers, dans un bruit de tempête s'est ouvert en deux en 1949. Toute la population alentours très intéressée, sur les yoles plein de courage allaient pêcher les barriques à la barbe des douaniers.

It is the only southern French port on the Atlantic capable of harbouring large ships, and is one of the eight self-governing French ports. Every year 9 million tons of merchandise go through its various ports. In the 1980s all the merchandise traffic moved downstream from the town centre to the Bassens port.

Now about 30 huge cruise ships and their 20,000 passengers put in at Bordeaux, right in front of the magnificent XVIIIth century Chamber of Commerce.

It's gastrnomy and wine are famous the world over : Graves, Médoc, Sauternes or Saint-Emilion wines are perfect with the spécialitys like the pibales or cibelles, the lamproies, l'alose, the tricandailles ,the merveilles and the sweet cannelé...
