- Noteworthy on the Canal des Deux Mers -

    The Canal du Midi was completed in 1667and officially opened to shipping in 1681. A titanic construction venture conceived by talented men :

  • The king Louis XIV
  • Finance minister under Louis XIV, Jean Baptiste Colbert
  • The creator and tax collector Pierre Paul Riquet
  • The Général Commissioner Vauban

    The idea of the Canal Lateral to the Garonne is from Riquet and Vauban. Works started in 1838 and were achieved in 1856.

1662 November 16th
Pierre Paul Riquet's first proposition to King Louis XIV minister, Colbert, for the building of a canal linking the two seas.
1663 January 18th
State 's decision to have the King's commissary and the Languedoc state to study the Pierre Paul Riquet's project.
1664 November 7th
Meeting in Toulouse of the commissary in charge of the study.
1665 January 19th
Commissary 's report suggesting a test channel to drive the Black Mountains water to Naurouze.
May 27
Pierre Paul Riquet's nomination as director for the channel test by the state counsel .
November 2nd
Ending of the channel test that brings water to Naurouze
1666 October 14th
The state award Pierre Paul Riquet the first section of the canal between Toulouse and Trèbes
1667 January 1st
Beginning of the construction
March 1st
Donation of 2 400000 livres by the Languedoc state payable in 8 years.
April 16th
Building of the Saint Ferréol Dam starts.
1668 May 14th
Adjudication to Pierre Paul Riquet of the second and third work sections on the canal and in exchange he was granted the canal as an hereditary fief..
November 17th
Beginning of the works for the lock in the port de l'Embouchure on the Garonne river.
May 8
First navigation test on the channel de la Plaine. Opening of the Toulouse - Naurouze section
1669 January 23rd
Pierre Paul Riquet gets the buildings of the third section.
1670 Filling up of the canal's section Naurouze-Trèbes.
1673 End of the work and filling up of the Naurouze-Castlnaudary Trèbes section.
1677 January 16th
Ay law Pierre Paul Riquet gets the property and the toll of the canal.
1680 November 4th
Pierre Paul Riquet dies in Toulouse.
1681 May 15th to 25th
Grand opening of the Royal Canal of Languedoc with boat 's blessing

Inspection by Mister d'Aguesseau. Leaving Marseille they reach La Garonne in 75 hours!

1686 Order from King's minister Vauban to break through the Cammazes . Decision by Vauban to build the lateral canal to the Garonne all the way to La Réole.
1777 Begining of the jonction Canal works in Narbonne.
1782 Building of the Lampy Dam in order to water supply the junction canal in Narbonne.

An II 16 Frimaire
Deposition of the canal 's project reaching Toulouse to Moissac.
1828 December 16th
Ordinance for the study. End of the study in 1830 .
1832 April 22nd
Building and up keeping given to Sir Doin who in exchange gets the toll.
1838 Take over of the project and FF 40 millions attribution for the works. Beginning of the Canal Lateral to the Garonne river.
1846 Order to proceed the works all the way to Castets en Dorthe.
1852 8 Juillet
Promulgation de la Loi par Napoléon III. Elle autorise à offrir en concession les deux voies réunies, Chemin de fer et Canal Latéral), avec abandon du Canal à titre gratuit, pour une durée de 99 ans. Seule condition, les travaux du Chemin de Fer et du Canal ne peuvent s'achever l'un sans l'autre.

Inauguration of the South Railroad company and the Canal lateral to the Garonne.
1856 Canal Latéral to the Garonne opening to navigation.

1858 By imperial decree the railroad get a 40 years lease on the canal. The canal destiny is up to the railroad company 's will .
1863 The administration seek to salvage the neglected canal
1879 The Freycinet 's Plan modernize all France's canals.
1880 Annulations of all toll fees on state 's own rivers and canals.
1897 November
Edict for the take over of the two seas canal by the state.
1898 January 1str
The state take over the Canal des Deux Mersl buying out share holders. The canals are now linked for ever
