Art structures
The Canal des Deux Mers has a total of 400 works ; 328 of them are on the Canal du Midi including the water system and the Robine. The other 72 are on the canal lateral to the Garonne and downstream to the Lot, Tarn and Baïse Rivers. At the watershed , one can see the Saint Ferréol dam construction , the Lampy lake or the more recent work of the Cammazes dam.
Knowing the time of their construction the Plaine and Montagne channels are amazing! Cobbled stones are tightly covering their beds in order to keep water infiltration to the minimum. All along the Canal one can see beautiful structures dating from 1860-1880 including the first world Ponts Canaux. Locks on the Canal du Midi all have differents shapes, some of them unique in their design .The engineering of the Libron locks are a good exemple of theses works in their long lasting fight against Nature. Visitors are coming from all over the world to seight see the functioning of the famous Pente d'eau built on the Canal.
Many windmills were built on the Canal using its water to grind their wheat. In 1850, the crisis in the flour trade led to the gradual closure of the mills...
Pierre Paul Riquet and then Vauban throught of every thing. All the works like the small canals, the water basins or the aqueducs are still functioning and offfers a good navigation on the Canal, after all this years.
